Baseball come-from-behind effort ends short

GREENVILLE, Ill. -- The baseball team hosted Washington-St. Louis on Wednesday night and nearly erased a 7-1 deficit as they suffered a 7-6 to a team that is receiving votes in the NCAA Division III national poll.

Senior Mike Hardin gave Greenville a 3-for-4 effort as he scored one run.

The Panthers found themselves facing an early defict as Washington scored twice in the top of the first inning and added a run in the top of the third.

Greenville made the game 3-1 when Danny Strohm stole third base during a walk to Travis Ralls and went home when a throwing error by the catcher sailed into left field.

Washington added two runs in the top of the fourth and sixth innings for the 7-1 lead.

The Panthers rallied in the bottom of the sixth for five runs.

Jesse Getz scored Greenville's second run when a ball hit by Shane Olmsted was misplayed by the second baseman, allowing him to reach safely.

Sam Hodges produced an RBI single, and Klaiton Wolff came up with a two run double.

Greenville closed their scoring on a fielder's choice hit by Strohm.

Bryce Pearce was the starting pitcher, and he went three innings, allowing five runs, three earned, on four hits and four walks.

Relievers Austin Rexroad (one inning), Devin Mayfield (one inning), Cole Becker (two innings), Logan Murphy (one inning), and Wolff (one inning) did not allow any earned runs.  Only Mayfield permitted two unearned runs.

The Panthers (8-8) travel to perennial favorite Webster for a doubleheader on Saturday at GCS Ballpark beginning at Noon.
