Baseball opens spring break with two wins

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The baseball team started their spring break trip to Florida with a pair of wins on Monday.  The Panthers topped Cornell College 6-5 and Beloit 9-7 in their opening action of the trip.

Starting pitcher Jonah Moore found himself in early trouble in the first game, spotting Cornell with three runs before the Panthers could hit.

Greenville got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first with an RBI single from Adam Lamb.

The Panthers later received an RBI single from Sam Hodges in the third inning to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Moore permitted one more run in the fourth inning when a runner scored on a wild pitch.  Moore worked six innings, giving up four runs on four hits.

Greenville exploded with four runs in the seventh inning to take a 6-4 lead.

In the Panther seventh, Lamb delivered another RBI single, Andrew Torbeck was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Joe Wood provided a bases-loaded two-run single.

Austin Rexroad picked up the win for the Panthers with two scoreless innings of relief, and Klaiton Wolff earned the save.

In game two, starting pitcher Lamb gave up a first inning run, but the Panthers battled back with a run in the bottom of the inning when Hodges provided an RBI single.

The clutch hit for the Panthers came in the third inning when Torbeck hit a grand slam to give Greenville a 5-1 advantage.

In the fifth inning, Torbeck had a two-run double and Wood's groundout plated a run.

The Panthers allowed six runs over the fifth and sixth innings, but still held an 8-7 lead when Wolff stepped to the plate in the seventh inning and mashed a solo home run.

Lamb recorded the pitching win with six innings and just two earned runs allowed.  Logan Murphy pitched the ninth inning for his first save.

The Panthers (6-4) play Loras on Tuesday in Kissimmeee.
