Baseball suffers sweep by Webster

SAUGET, Ill. - The baseball team struggled to get on track in a doubleheader sweep by Webster on Saturday. Webster won 8-2 and 16-0 in the day's action.

Game one saw Webster take a 4-0 lead in the first inning, and they added three runs in the fourth for a 7-0 lead.

The Panthers scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Zach Cameron provided an RBI single in the fifth, and Sam Hodges had a sacrifice fly to left field in the sixth.

Jonah Moore completed the game on the mound. He pitched six innings, holding Webster to three earned runs on seven hits, and he struck out five.

Ryan Taylor and Devin Gumb each had two hits for GU.

Game two went to Webster in convincing fashion as the Gorloks went ahead 3-0 in the second inning and added six runs in the fourth. In the fifth inning, Webster scored twice, and they had five runs in the sixth.

Gumb provided another pair of hits for Greenville.

Logan Murphy was the starting pitcher, and he allowed four runs on seven hits.

Sam Alender relieved Murphy for one inning, but he gave up five runs, three earned, on four hits.

Lukas Whitten did not retire a batter as he allowed two runs, and Hunter Cullum worked 1.1 innings, permitting five runs, three earned, on three hits.

Chad Plath closed the game on the mound for Greenville with a perfect two-thirds of an inning.

The Panthers (20-12, 12-5 SLIAC) host Millikin on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
