Football drops opening game at Wartburg

WAVERLY, Iowa - The football team traveled to Iowa to face the nation's No. 13 ranked Wartburg team and was defeated 73-13 after Wartburg raced out to a 30 point lead in the first quarter and a 47-3 lead at halftime.

The Panther passing attack outpaced Wartburg as sophomore quarterback Dalton Mitchell produced 241 passing yards on a 12-of-22 performance.  Mitchell connected with Myles Kanipes on a 97 yard pass, and Kanipes led all receivers with three catches for 146 yards.

Daniel McCloud scored Greenville's only touchdown of the day with 5:18 to go in the third quarter on a 13-yard rush.  McCloud's TD made the deficit 54-10.  He rushed seven times for 37 yards.

Rafael Branquinho Soares de Castro had two field goals in the game, a 24 yarder with three seconds to go in the second quarter and a 25 yarder with 13:47 remaining in the game.  de Castro also recorded a PAT.

The Panther offense was outgained 516-273 in the game.

Greenville's defensive efforts were paced by Gavin Jordan with three solo blocks and eight block assists.

Kaitroy Hubbard had an interception and returned the ball 32 yards.

THe Panthers (0-1) travel to Kalamazoo for a game next Saturday.
