Men's basketball win sends them to first place tie in SLIAC

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The men's basketball team defeated Fontbonne 148-137 on Saturday and pulled into a first place tie in the SLIAC standings with the win.

The teams traded the lead in the first half, but Fontbonne ended the first half with a 65-63 advantage.

The first six minutes of the second half saw both teams share the lead, but Greenville went up 85-83 on layup by Johari Dix with just over 14 minutes remaining and never again trailed.  The Panthers extended the lead to 18 with just under 10 minutes to play.

The bulk of Greenville's scoring was shared between seven men with 14 to 23 points.  Isiah Price was top scorer for GU with 23 points.  He was followed by Rakim Murphy with 20 and Marvin Bateman with 19.

Riley Simmons and Dix each posted 17 points, and Barry Nixon added 14.

The Panthers won the game behind the three point line and at the free throw line.  Greenville made 28-of-67 three point attempts to check in at over 40 percent and went 27-of-35 at the free throw line.

The Panthers (5-4, 3-1 SLIAC) will be off until Friday, December 29, when they go to Defiance College for a tournament and face Waynesburg in the first game of a four team bracket.
