Men's basketball closes December with 129-117 loss to Dominican

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The men's basketball team suffered a 129-117 loss to Dominican at home on Tuesday night in the final game of their December schedule.

The Panthers jumped ahead early, opening up a 20-8 lead in the first four and a half minutes of the game, and GU pushed their advantage to 34-21 with 10:37 remaining in the opening half. The Panthers eventually led 47-33 with 6:26 left in the opening half.

Greenville held a 59-46 lead when Dominican called a timeout with 2:32 to go in the first half.

Over the remainder of the stanza, the Stars went on a 13-1 run, capped by a three-pointer at the end of the period to make the score 60-59 in Greenville's favor at halftime.

The teams traded leads in the early moments of the second half, but Dominican took a slim lead when they made a layup and converted the free throw attempt on the three-point play when 17 minutes remained in the second half.

The Stars extended the lead to nine with 8:19 to go in the game after a pair of free throws made the score 98-89.

Greenville battled back to tie the game at 98-all on a 9-0 run, forcing Dominican to call a timeout with 7:02 on the game clock.

GU took a two-point lead at 105-103 when Chris Jackson made a three-pointer with 6:04 left in the game, but the Stars quickly regained the lead.

Dominican went on a 14-0 run over the next four minutes to put the game out of reach.

The Panthers number two unit had all three of GU's top scorers with Sontiago Grady leading the way with 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting, including a 2-of-7 mark behind the three-point line and 2-of-2 free throws.

Barry Nixon and Riley Simmons added 14 points, and Quincy Pinkard had 10 points.

Greenville's leading rebounder was Elijah Wychers with seven boards, and Pinkard was the top assist man with five. Pinkard also had a team-high four steals as the Panthers forced 36 turnovers.

The Panthers (3-7) resume their season on Jan. 4 at Spalding.
