Men's soccer records no contest in match against Millikin

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The men's soccer team kicked off their 2019 regular season with a match against Millikin that ended in a 1-1 no contest. The match concluded in the 70th minute, just 25 seconds shy of becoming an official match when lightning within 10 miles required a delay and eventual end.

Greenville fell behind in the sixth minute when a GU foul just outside the penalty box led to a free kick that was headed past goalkeeper Nick Holland to give Millikin a 1-0 lead.

The score remained 1-0 in Millikin's favor until Greenville tied the match in the 56th minute.

Greenville earned their goal when Juan Salazar capitalized on a deep Millikin turnover, controlled the ball, and took a shot that short-hopped Millikin's goalkeeper and bounded past him into the net.

The Panther pressure was evident throughout the match as Greenville outshot Millikin 10-4 and held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Jared McPeek led GU with four shots, and Juan Garcia and Luis Duran each had two shots.

Millkin managed to put three shots on goal, two of which Holland stopped for saves.

The Panthers (0-0) will try again on Saturday to play their first match of the season when Rockford visits Greenville for a 3 p.m. contest.
