Men's track and field receives All-American effort from Mitchell, Sharp qualifies for 800 finals

LA CROSSE, Wis. - The men's track and field team received an All-American performance from sophomore Greg Mitchell as they collected two and a half points to move into the 36th place position in a weather-delayed day at the NCAA Division III outdoor national championships.

Mitchell, who was participating in the high jump, became an All-American for the first time when he cleared 2.06 meters (6 feet-9 inches) to tie for sixth place.

He opened at 1.93 meters and cleared it on his first attempt.  He then passed 1.98 meters on attempt number one.

After missing on his first two attempts at 2.03 meters, Mitchell cleared the height on his third attempt, and he followed that by passing 2.06 meters on the first try.

The sixth through 12th place athetes all had a height of 6-9, but Mitchell was awarded a tie for sixth place becuase he only missed his height twice.

He became Greenville's first All-American in the high jump since Bryson Taylor in 2003.

Andrew Sharp completed Greenville's day of activity with his effort in the 800 meter run.

Sharp held the best time of the season going into the meet, and he posted the second best time of the day in the event.

He ran in the first of three preliminary heats and recorded an overalll time of 1:50.514.

Sharp completed the first 400 meters in 55.262 seconds and followed that with 55.252 seconds on the second lap.  He held the second position in his heat at both splits.

On Saturday, Sharp will compete in the finals of the 800 meter run for the fourth straight season as he goes for a fourth NCAA All-American award.
