LA CROSSE, Wis. - The men's track and field team has its fifth NCAA Division III national champion.  On Saturday, senior Andrew Sharp capped a stellar career with the victory in the 800 meter run at the outdoor national championships at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse.

Sharp's victory gave the Panthers 10 points in the team standings to total 12 1/2 points over the championships.

In Saturday's 800 final, Sharp posted a time of 55.389 in the first 400 meters, holding the second position after the first lap.

His final 400 meters was completed in 55.667 seconds, giving him a win by 17 hundredths of a second over a runner from Carleton.  Sharp finished in 1:50.06.

Sharp joins Jarrod Renford, Edgar Townsend (twice), and his former teammate Bruce Gray as Greenville's fourth NCAA Division III national champion.

Over Sharp's four-year career, he collected four NCAA Division III All-American awards.  Only Gray and Bryson Taylor collected more NCAA All-American finishes than Sharp.

The Panthers capped the season with the 24th place position in the NCAA national standings after coming into the championships with the 38th position in the USTFCCCA coaches' association rankings.
