Softball gives up seventh inning lead in loss at Monmouth

MONMOUTH, Ill. -- The softball team was only able to complete one of the two scheduled games at Monmouth on Friday as they lost 7-6 to Monmouth.

Greenville grabbed a 1-0 second inning lead when Becca Oldham scored on an error by the right fielder, but the Lady Panthers gave it to Monmouth as they scored twice in the home half of the second.

The Lady Panthers tied the game at 2-2 when Kate Jolliff crossed home plate with the benefit of an error by the catcher, and they took a 3-2 lead on Tiffany Samsoe's sacrifice fly.

Monmouth went back on top 5-3 with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.

In the top of the seventh, Jolliff singled in a run, and Cayla Speaks doubled with the bases loaded to give Greenville a 6-5 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Monmouth scratched across two runs for the win.

Brianna Anderson was the losing pitcher as she gave Greenville 5.1 innings with five runs, two earned, in a relief role.

The second game was halted in progress and later cancelled.

The Lady Panthers (5-8) return home to play Robert Morris Springfield on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
