Softball sweeps SLIAC rival Fontbonne

GREENVILLE, Ill. -- The softball team dodged raindrops all afternoon, but they were able to work through the adverse conditions to take a pair of 3-1 wins over Fontbonne on Friday.

In game one, Greenville scored an unearned run in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead.

Fontbonne tightened the game with a run in the top of the fourth, but Greenville added a much-needed insurance run with Becca Oldham's sixth inning home run.

Brianna Anderson pitched all seven innings for Greenville in improving her record to 9-5.  She struck out one and only allowed six baserunners on two hits and four walks.

Game two saw Greenville benefit from a three-run error by Fontbonne in the fourth inning to win the game.

Shelby Cash attempted a sacrifice bunt with runners on first and second, only to see the Fontbonne pitcher throw the ball behind her on the way to first base and down the right field line.  By the time the right fielder retrieved the ball and got it to the infield, Cash had scored.

Caitie Opp was Greenville's starting pitcher, and she completed five innings.  She only allowed one run in picking up the win.

Becca Oldham worked two innings to gain the save.

The Lady Panthers (17-12, 10-2 SLIAC) are squarely in the hunt for one of the top two seeds in the conference tournament, and they will travel to Principia for a doubleheader on Saturday.
