Softball falls to Buena Vista

GREENVILLE, Ill. -- The softball team dropped a pair of games to Buena Vista on Friday afternoon in Greenville.  The Panthers fell 13-5 in six innings of game one before losing 9-8 in the second game.

In game one, Buena Vista immediately took a 4-0 advantage as they knocked out Panther starting pitcher Caitie Opp by the second inning.

The Panthers made the score 5-2 with a two run double by Kate Jolliff Rosado in the third inning, but Buena Vista got those two runs back in the fourth inning and added five in the fifth.

Greenville was down to its final out in the fifth inning when Beth Mersinger lifted a three-run home run that hit the left field foul pole to keep the Panthers alive at 11-5.

The Panthers gave up two runs in the sixth inning and couldn't score in their half to allow Buena Vista to take the 13-5 win in six innings.

Rosado went 2-for-3 with two RBI, and Mersinger was 1-for-3.

Game two went back and forth over the last three innings after Greenville erased a 5-0 first inning deficit.

The Panthers put three runs on the scoreboard in the fifth inning to make the score 5-3.  In the three-run fifth, Greenville got runs when Becca Oldham was hit by a pitch, Mersinger singled, and Megan Barrett reached on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded.

Buena Vista added a run in the fifth to take a 6-3 lead, but Greenville grabbed their first lead of the day with a four-run sixth inning.

Mersinger hit a two-run double, and Kendall Farr had a two-run single in the sixth.

Buena Vista got the lead back with three sixth inning runs off Maegan Stone, and the Panthers could only muster one run in the top of the seventh when Rosado singled to the shortstop.

Mersinger was 4-for-5 with a run scored and three RBI.  Jordan Wieland went 3-for-4 and scored twice.

The Panthers (2-8) play Luther at home on Saturday in a 10 a.m. doubleheader.
