Softball kicks off season with split in Myrtle Beach

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The softball team earned a split in South Carolina in their first action of the season.  The Panthers played Immaculata and Centenary in Myrtle Beach and received a 3-0 loss from Immaculata before topping Centenary 8-0 in five innings.

In game one, the Panthers allowed a first inning run and two in the sixth as Immaculata held their offense at bay.

Deidra Holzhauer pitched all six innings, allowing three runs on three hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

Kayla Zimmerman and Amanda Atteberry combined to provide four of Greenville's five hits with each getting a single and double.  Maegan Stone also had a double.

Greenville took immediate control of game two against Centenary, scoring a first inning run on an RBI double from Holzhauer.

The Panthers added four runs in the third inning after an RBI single from Megan Barrett, a sacrifice fly by Holzhauer, an RBI double from Beth Mersinger, and a bases-loaded walk drawn by Olivia Shipman.

In the fourth inning, Greenville gave themselves the margin they needed to finish the game early with three runs.  Holzhauer chipped in an RBI single, the Panthers received a run-scoring fielder's choice from Mersinger, and Stone added an RBI single.

Pitcher Caitie Opp went four scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out two to pick up the win.  Stone relieved Opp with a scoreless fifth inning as she closed the game.

The Panthers (1-1) continue their trip with games on Tuesday when they play Morrisville State and Medaille.
