Softball takes one of two on Wednesday of spring break trip

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The softball team split a pair of games on Wednesday during their spring break trip. The Panthers fell 9-2 to Medaille in their opening game of the day before topping Albertus Magnus by a 16-5 score.

In game one, the Panthers were unable to recover from seven runs scored by Medaille in the first inning.

Greenville scored once in the second inning and one in the fourth inning to make it a 7-2 game, but Medaille added two runs in the top of the fifth.

In the second inning, GU received an RBI groundout by Emma Funk, and in the fourth inning, the Panthers got an RBI double from Emma Deters.

Panther Mia Boyd went 2-for-3 in the game, scoring on Funk's RBI groundout, and Funk added a run when she crossed the plate following the Deters double.

Chesleigh Pugh had a rough start in the circle, allowing seven runs, one earned, while just recording one out.

Alison Klaus finished the game with 6.2 innings, giving up two runs on three hits and six walks while striking out six.

The Panthers had an offensive explosion in game two, receiving five hits from Jaclyn Belzer and four from Sydnee Plesko and Morgan Wendling in their 11-run win.

Melissa Bernal was credited with the win, pitching seven innings and allowing one run on three hits. She was briefly relieved by Sydney Lasher in the fifth inning, but Lasher did not retire a batter while permitting four runs.

Greenville scored multiple runs in the second, third, sixth, and seventh innings and racked up 22 hits in the game.

Belzer went 5-for-6 with two runs scored and four RBI, and Plesko recorded a 4-for-5 game with three runs scored and one RBI.

Belzer and Funk each doubled, and Desirae Yost posted a triple.

The Panthers (4-10) will have an off-day on Thursday before concluding Spring Break with games against Lycoming and Franciscan on Friday.
