Women's basketball takes SLIAC control with 83-62 win at Westminster

FULTON, Mo. - The women's basketball team reached the midpoint in their conference schedule with a two game lead over the rest of the league after their 83-62 win at Westminster on Monday afternoon.

The teams combined for a relatively high scoring first quarter as the Panthers jumped ahead 25-19 after the first period.  A layup by Morgan St. James near the end of the quarter put Greenville up by six for their largest lead of the opening stanza.

In the second quarter, GU's lead reached 13 with 7:20 remaining until halftime when Megan Barrett converted a layup and completed the three point play.  Westminster tightened the score, but Greenville still led 43-36 at the half.

The third quarter saw the Panthers go on a run that put them up by 17 at the end of the period when they outscored the Blue Jays 20-10 for a 63-46 lead.

They extended the lead to 24 on four occasions in the fourth quarter and settled for the 21 point win.

Wesley Woodard posted a career high 27 points in the game by making 12-of-17 shots, including her first three-pointer of the season, and 2-of-3 free throws.  Morgan St. James added a scoring punch with 14 points, and Emily Brandland produced a line of 13 points, eight rebounds, and four assists.

The Panthers (13-3, 8-0 SLIAC) host Principia on Tuesday night at 5:30 p.m.
