GREENVILLE, Ill. - The women's basketball team faced Webster for the third time this season and won 68-65 in a game that went to overtime in a SLIAC tournament contest.
Greenville scored the first 13 points of the game and held a double figure advantage before Webster managed to score. Greenville's lead after the first quarter was 21-12 as they attempted to defeat Webster for the third time in the season.
In the second quarter, the Panthers pushed their lead to 34-14, but Webster held the Panthers to two points the rest of the quarter and tightened the score to 36-23 at halftime.
The Gorloks took six points off the Greenville lead in the third quarter, making the score 50-43.
In final stanza, Webster tied the score at 58-all with 1:32 to go and took a three-point lead with 53 seconds remaining.
Megan Barrett sank a three-point bucket with 28 seconds to play, tying the game at 61-all, and neither team could score over the last 28 seconds to send the game to overtime.
In the overtime period, Greenville made a pair of back door layups, and Morgan St. James took a defensive rebound all the way to the bucket for a layup with 43 seconds to play for a 67-65 lead. Brittany Lopez sank an insurance free throw late to give Greenville a three-point lead, and a game-tying three point attempt by Webster was short at the buzzer.
St. James was the leading scorer for the Panthers with 19 points, 11 rebounds, and four blocked shots.
Barrett added 17 points.
Jantzen Michael and Wesley Woodard each had 11 points, and Woodard provided four assists.
Prior to the game, the SLIAC postseason awards ceremony recognized the SLIAC regular season champion Panthers.
In addition, Woodard was given first team honors, and Michael and St. James were on the second team.
Greenville had an entry on the All-Defensive team in Barrett, and Lauren Eagleson was placed on the All-Sportsmanship team.
The Panthers (22-4) will play Spalding on Saturday at 1 p.m. for the SLIAC tournament championship and the conference's automatic bid in the NCAA tournament. Greenville split its regular season games with the Golden Eagles, winning 68-66 at home on January 5. Greenville returns to the tournament championship game for the third time in four years. The Panthers won the SLIAC tournament in 2016.
