Women's basketball drops opener despite comeback effort

FULTON, Mo. - The women's basketball team started their 2019-20 season with an 81-74 loss against Millikin at Westminster College.

The Panthers trailed after each of the first two quarters. Greenville was down 24-15 after the first period, and they faced a 43-31 deficit at halftime.

Greenville came alive in the third quarter, outscoring Millikin 31-15 and establishing a 62-58 lead going into the final stanza.

The Panthers managed to hold the lead until a pair of free throws with 2:47 to go in the game put Millikin on top 70-69. Greenville went ahead 71-70 on a layup by Madelyn Stephen, but that was their final lead of the game as Millikin went on a 11-3 run to close the game.

Greenville was led in scoring by freshman Emily Reinneck who scored 16 points on 6-of-17 shooting, including a 3-of-6 mark behind the three point line and 1-of-2 at the free throw line.

Megan Barrett joined Reinneck in double figures with 13 points.

Clarissa Duebel managed to produced a team-high 10 rebounds, and Brittany Lopez passed out seven assists while collecting three steals and a blocked shot.

The Panthers (0-1) will play Illinois College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
