Women's soccer drops heartbreaking double overtime match to Fontbonne

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The women's soccer team gave everything they had on Thursday night in their return to the SLIAC tournament, but Fontbonne slipped by Greenville 3-2 in double overtime.

The Griffins took the early lead with a goal in the first five minutes of the contest.  The score went to halftime with a 1-0 lead for Fontbonne.

Greenville evened the game at 1-1 in the 58th minute when Suzi Conner collected her third goal of the season with assists from Ellie Cummins and Dani Pearce.

Twenty minutes later Fontbonne regained the lead, but Pearce slipped the match-tying goal past Fontbonne's goalkeeper with 7:29 remaining.  It was Pearce's 13th of the season, and Gabbie Hartin provided the assist.

The first overtime saw Greenville put one shot on goal, but they couldn't break through.

With 3:32 to go in the second overtime, Fontbonne gained the winning goal to send them to the SLIAC tournament championship match.

Greenville's Hope Brakenhoff tallied 10 saves as Fontbonne placed 13 shots on goal.

The Panthers were led in shots by Pearce, Conner, Megan Taylor, and Cummins who each had two.

The Panthers (13-7) completed their season with the most wins in a season since the Greenville won 14 or more each season from 2007 to 2011.  Their record improved by five wins on last year's mark of 8-10-1.
