Women's tennis captures second place at Millikin tournament

DECATUR, Ill. - The women's tennis team began their 2021 fall season with a split of two 9-0 matches at Millikin's tournament on Saturday. The Panthers came out ahead in a 9-0 win over Cornell College before falling 9-0 to Millikin.

In the Panthers opening match, Greenville recorded wins in No. 1 through No. 5 singles and No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles were considered forfeit wins for Greenville because Cornell only used a roster of five players.

On the singles side, No. 3 Reynolds only allowed her opponent to pick up one game in a 6-0, 6-1 victory.

No. 4 Principal rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 win, and No. 1 Birosta gained a 6-2, 6-2 win.

In her debut as a Panther, No. 5 Stephanie Kamp collected a 6-1, 6-4 triumph.

No. 2 Brannon fought through a 7-5 opening set in her singles match before taking the match and second set 6-1.

Later in the championship match of the tournament against Millikin, No. 4 Principal pushed her opponent to a third set tiebreaker in a 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 loss.

Principal and Reynolds challenged the opposition in No. 2 doubles but were handed an 8-5 loss.

The Panthers (1-1) return to action on Sept. 4 in a home match against Loras at 2 p.m.
