Gilles leads women's track and field to 27th place in NCAA Division III

NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- The women's track and field team concluded their indoor season with a 27th place finish at the NCAA Division III championships on Saturday.  The team earned eight points with Chelsea Gilles' second NCAA All-American performance.

Gilles had competed Friday in the 200 and 400 meter dashes and advanced to the finals in the 400.

On Saturday, Gilles posted a time of 55.69 seconds to place second.  She entered the finals as the second-seeded entry after Friday's 55.90 finish.

This marked Gilles' second straight second place finish in the NCAA 400 meter dash competition.  Last May, Gilles was the national runner up in the outdoor finals.

Gilles led all competitors in Saturday's final after the first 200 meters.  She clocked a time of 26.200 seconds in the first half of the race.  She wrapped up the last 200 meters in 29.488 seconds as the event's winner surpassed her by less than one tenth of a second.

The team's 27th place finish was their best since taking 25th in the 2012 indoor national meet.

Gilles is the first indoor national runner up in women's track and field history.

The team will return to action on March 24 at Washington-St. Louis in their first outdoor meet of the season.
