Baseball stomps Nebraska Wesleyan 13-3

O'FALLON, Mo. - The baseball team delivered a eight-inning victory over Nebraska Wesleyan on Monday at CarShield Field in O'Fallon, Mo., as they defeated NWU by the mercy rule, 13-3.

Greenville allowed a first inning run in NWU's half of the first inning, but starting pitcher Logan Murphy settled down after that and provided the Panthers with six effective innings to improve his record to 1-0.

In the bottom of the first, the Panthers put three runs on the scoreboard after a two-run error by the left fielder followed by a sacrifice fly by Joe Wood.

The Panthers tacked on another run in the third with an RBI double from Zach Cameron.

In the fourth inning, GU scored five times to open up a 9-1 lead.  Klaiton Wolff drew a bases-loaded walk, a fielder's choice by Sam Hodges pushed a run across the plate, Andrew Torbeck cleared the bases with a two-run triple, and Wood added an RBI single.

The Prairie Wolves scored two unearned runs in the top of the seventh off Lukas Whitten, but Greenville ended the game with four runs in the bottom of the eighth.

In the eighth inning, Wood once again produced an RBI single, Mark Islas had a two-run single, and Ryan Taylor closed the game with an RBI single up the middle.

The Greenville bats were hot, highlighted by two hits from Taylor, Torbeck, Wood, and Islas.  Wood totaled three RBI.

The first six batters in GU's order scored two runs apiece - Taylor, Adam Lamb, Wolff, Hodges, Torbeck, and Wood

The Panthers (4-2) host Illinois Wesleyan on Wednesday at Noon in O'Fallon, Ill., at O'Fallon Family Sports Park.
