Baseball tops Blackburn 6-3 on Friday night

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The baseball team continued their perfect start to the SLIAC season with a 6-3 win over Blackburn on Friday at Robert E. Smith Field.  After a non-conference schedule that saw the Panthers post eight wins in their first 15 games, the Panthers improved to 3-0 in the SLIAC.

Greenville starting pitcher Jonah Moore was on the top of his game early, retiring the side 1-2-3 in the opening inning.  Blackburn managed to put baserunners on base in the next four innings, but Moore worked his way through them.

In the bottom of the second, Greenville took a 2-0 lead.  Andrew Torbeck reached base on an error, stole second, and advanced to third on a groundout.  Jaime Quesada delivered a two out RBI single to give Greenville its first run, and Mark Islas sent Quesada home with an RBI double.

The Panthers sent seven batters to the plate in the third inning as they scored four runs.

Ryan Taylor reached first base on a bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error by the pitcher.  Adam Lamb sent Taylor to third with a bunt single.  Klaiton Wolff struck out for the first out of the inning, but Taylor stole home as Lamb stole second on the pitch to give GU a 3-0 lead.

Sam Hodges and Torbeck posted back-to-back RBI doubles to bring the score to 5-0, and Torbeck added Greenville's sixth run on an RBI single from Ty Maxie.

Moore permitted three runs in the top of the fifth and yielded the mound to Cole Becker in the sixth inning.  Moore earned the win to move to 1-1.

Becker worked three scoreless innings before Wolff closed the door in the ninth for his fifth save.

At the plate, Taylor and Maxie delivered two hits, and Torbeck scored two runs.

The Panthers (11-7, 3-0 SLIAC) will host Blackburn in a doubleheader on Saturday at Robert E. Smith Field with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
