Baseball tops SLIAC leader Spalding

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The baseball kept their hopes alive for the SLIAC Eastern Division title with their 4-2 win over Spalding at Robert E. Smith Field on Friday night.

The Panthers broke up a scoreless game in the bottom of the third with two runs. Ty Maxie singled and was doubled to third by Ryan Taylor with nobody out.

An RBI groundout by Adam Lamb allowed Maxie to score, and Klaiton Wolff singled home Taylor for a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth, Spalding reached Jonah Moore for a run, and they tied Greenville at 2-2 in the top of the seventh.

In the bottom of the seventh, GU answered with two runs. Maxie started the inning by being hit by a pitch and stole second. Lamb produced an infield single to put runners on the corners, and Wolff was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out.

Sam Hodges provided a sacrifice fly to centerfield, and Joe Wood delivered an RBI single.

Moore was the winning pitcher, going seven innings and only permitting two runs, one earned, to improve to 4-2.

Austin Rexroad threw a scoreless eighth, and Wolff pitched a perfect ninth for his eighth save of the season.

Hodges led GU's lineup with a 2-for-3 hitting performance, and Maxie scored twice.

The Panthers (21-14) will host a doubleheader against Spalding on Saturday at 1 p.m.
