NEW ULM, Minn. - The football team's early season winning streak ended at the hands of the defending UMAC champion Martin Luther squad as the Knights defeated GU by a 43-14 final score on Saturday.

Turnovers and penalties served as the Panthers downfall. Four interceptions and a fumble along with 12 flags for 95 yards proved difficult to overcome.

After the first quarter, Greenville trailed 14-0 and a touchdown early in the second quarter made the score 20-0.

Greenville put points on the scoreboard after a three-play drive spanning 55 yards ended with a Christian Moss one yard touchdown run. An extra point by Rafael Soares de Castro made the score 20-7.

Martin Luther went to halftime leading 27-7 after scoring with 3:36 remaining in the half.

Greenville cut the deficit to 27-14 early in the third quarter. A six-play 61 yard drive ended with a 19 yard touchdown reception from Kyler Henson when he caught a pass from George Harris.

Martin Luther responded on their next possession with a touchdown to establish a 34-14 advantage and scored another touchdown before the end of the third quarter. The score stood at 40-14 after three periods.

In the fourth quarter, MLC added a field goal.

Despite the final score, running back Paul Garrett established a new career-high with 151 rushing yards on 22 carries. He had a long run of 36 yards and averaged 6.9 yards per attempt. Garrett collected nearly 75 percent of Greenville's total offensive yardage.

Greenville was outgained 549-199 in the game.

Quarterback George Harris faced a challenging opponent and ended 5-of-17 for 52 yards with two interceptions. Quarterback Dalton Mitchell went 3-of-9 for 24 yards, and he also was picked off twice.

Henson caught two passes for 37 yards.

Defensively, Anthony Esquivel produced Greenville's top tackling total of eight. He had one and a half tackles for a loss and an assist on a quarterback sack.

Kenneth Young and Joshua Robinson each had six tackles, and Young helped Esquivel on a quarterback sack.

Gavin Jordan created a forced fumble recovered by Javiera Bovell.

Jacob Hutchinson and Bryson Johnson each blocked PAT attempts.

The Panthers (2-2, 1-1 UMAC) return home on Saturday, Oct. 5, to play Westminster at 1 p.m.
