Men's basketball wins in overtime on Greene's half-court buzzer beater

GREENVILLE, Ill. -- A game whose ending found itself as a Bonus Top Ten entry on ESPN Sportscenter captivated the home crowd on Wednesday as Greenville gained a 145-142 win in overtime on Kenny Greene's half-court shot as time expired.

The Panthers held control of the game in the early going, pushing their advantage to more than 20 points in the first half.  Eureka closed the gap to 65-54 as the game entered halftime.

A 72-61 second half by Eureka forced the game to overtime.

The teams headed to overtime when Elmo Smith hit a three-pointer to tied the game 126-126 with 3.2 seconds remaining in the game.

Greenville and Eureka saw the game feature 17 ties as it went back-and-forth throughout the second half.  A 19-16 overtime was capped by Greene's buzzer beating winner.

Shane Smith maded 12-of-17 field goal attempts, including two three-pointers and eight free throws to lead Greenville with 34 points.

Greene, the hero of the game, had 27 points on 10 field goals, including four three-pointers, and three free throws.

Elmo Smith added 17 points.

Shane Smith and DeAndre Brown led the Panthers with seven rebounds, and Brown chipped in five steals.

Johari Dix put together an outing that led to 12 points, seven assists, and six steals.

Eureka's Hank Thomas had a career night with 44 points.

The Panthers (11-3, 5-2 SLIAC) travel to Principia for a game on Saturday at 2 p.m.  Greenville currently sits in a second place tie in the SLIAC standings with Iowa Wesleyan.
