Men's soccer knocks off Illinois Tech in Chicago

CHICAGO, Ill. - The men's soccer team received a header from Christian Gomez in the 76th minute to push past Illinois Tech 1-0 in the conclusion of their trip to Chicago over the weekend.

The match was evenly contested with each team posting 19 shots in the match.  Greenville's scoring opportunities were more frequent.  Greenville finished with a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal.

Santiago Alzate recorded four shots for GU, and Juan Garcia added three shots.

Gomez's goal came after a cross and deflection as Ian MacLean and Benn Jane provided the assists.  Gomez was the only Panther with two shots on goal.

Goalkeeper Nick Holland was tested and produced his first shutout of the season with four saves.

The Panthers (2-2) host Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in Greenville.
