Men's volleyball opens with pair of wins

MEQUON, Wis. -- The men's volleyball team started their third season as the squad gained a three-set win over Concordia (Wis.) and a five-set victory against Illinois Tech on Saturday.

In the day's opening match, the Panthers took a 25-18, 25-15, 25-15 triumph in a brisk 57 minute match.

Marc Gonzalez opened his GU career with a team-high 16 points on 11 kills, four service aces, and two block assists in the matchup against Concordia.

Kyle Ward and Johnny Milabu each recorded nine points.  Ward produced eight kills and two block assists while Milabu collected seven kills and four block assists.

Tanner Smith opened his season with 35 assists, and Logan Dameris had six digs.

The Panthers' second match went the distance with Greenville taking a 25-23, 18-25, 25-23, 17-25, 15-11 decision.

Gonzalez once again led the squad with 14 points on 12 kills, one solo block, and two block assists.  He also had 14 digs.

Ward posted an 11 point outing with eight kills, two service aces, and two block assists.

Smith gained 38 assists and also earned two solo blocks and a block assist.

Dameris picked up 17 digs to lead Greenville's defense.

The Panthers (2-0) will host Missouri Baptist's JV and Lincoln College's JV and varsity in H.J. Long Gymnasium on Wednesday with matches at 3, 5, and 7 p.m.
