Men's volleyball splits home opening night matches

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The men's volleyball team opened the home portion of their schedule with a two-set win over Lincoln's club team before capping the evening with a five-set loss to Lincoln's varsity on Tuesday night.

The Panthers started the evening on the right foot with a 25-18, 25-16 win in a best of three match.

In the match's opening set, GU hit at a .241 rate and improved to .500 in the second set.

The Panthers caused trouble for Lincoln at the net as Lincoln finished with a sub zero hitting percentage of -.082.

Greenville newcomer Kaleb Cruz provided five kills to lead the team.  Tim Neff also added five points that came on three kills, one solo block, and a service ace.

Tanner Smith helped Greenville with six digs and 23 set assists.

In the evening's second match, GU suffered a 25-20, 22-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-13 setback.

After falling in the opening set, the Panthers controlled the next two and a half sets, eventually holding an 11-5 lead in the fourth set.  Lincoln battled back, going ahead 13-12 and never again trailing in a set.

In the fifth set, Greenville faced match point at 14-10 and scored the next three points to turn up the pressure on Lincoln before the Lynx finished the match with a kill.

Nick Corrigan had a nice evening on the attack, producing 13 kills and only two errors in 29 attempts to hit at a .379 rate.

Kyle Ward led GU in kills with 14 and swung at a .091 clip.  He also added two service aces, a solo block, and two block assists.

Isaiah Canales provided 12 points with eight kills, one solo block, and four block assists.

Smith had a team-high 40 set assists and 12 digs.

The Panthers (5-4) host Missouri Baptist's JV on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 7 p.m.
