Men's volleyball tops Maranatha, falls to Fontbonne

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The men's volleyball team split a pair of matches in St. Louis on Saturday. Greenville took a three-set win over Maranatha Baptist in the day's opening match before falling in three sets to Fontbonne.

In the day's opening match, Greenville defeated Maranatha 25-10, 25-18, 25-18 in just 58 minutes. It was GU's second victory against MBU this season.

The Panthers produced 11 kills/1 error/27 attacks/.370 hitting percentage in the first set before slipping to 12/6/27/.222 in the second set. Greenville improved to 14/5/27/.333 in the final set.

Kyle Ward gave Greenville an effort of 9/4/17/.294 to lead the team in kills.

Peter Binder provided Greenville with a line of 6/1/20/.250 as they gave him extensive action on the attack.

Ryan Nelson found himself active in the back row with 12 digs, and Tanner Smith added 28 set assists.

In the day's second match, the Panthers were set back 25-21, 25-23, 25-11 in their second match of three this season against Fontbonne.

The Panthers outhit Fontbonne in the first set as they produced a line of 15/6/42/.214 compared to an 8/2/33/.182 effort from Fontbonne, but Greenville was victimized by nine service errors that gave Fontbonne effortless points.

Greenville slipped to 14/7/39/.179 in the second set and fell to 8/5/29/.103 in the final set.

Overall, Greenville gave away 40 points in the match.

George Black produced a solid line of 13/5/31/.258 to lead the team in kills.

Smith added 30 set assists, and Nelson had another 12 digs.

At the net, Smith added a solo block and block assist.

The Panthers (9-7) travel to Lincoln for matches on Wednesday against Lincoln's junior varsity and varsity teams.
