Women's basketball wraps up second straight SLIAC outright championship

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - One year after earning their first SLIAC title since 1997, the women's basketball team made it two straight outright league titles with a 78-69 victory at Webster on Saturday.

The Panthers' 21st win of the season set a new team record for the most regular season wins since the squad joined the NCAA Division III in 1995.  Last year, Greenville had a regular season record of 20-5.

In Saturday's game, Greenville trailed 21-18 after the first quarter, but they outscored Webster 22-12 in the second quarter to take a 40-33 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, Webster tightened the score to 57-56, but Greenville came back to outscore the Gorloks 21-13 in the final period to win by nine.

Jantzen Michael held the scoring lead for Greenville with 18 points in 33 minutes.  She also led GU with four steals.

Morgan St. James filled a reserve role and managed to post 15 points, six rebounds, and five blocked shots in 19 minutes.

Emily Brandland posted 13 points and six rebounds over 27 minutes.

The Panthers (21-4, 15-1 SLIAC) will play Webster again on Thursday at home in the SLIAC tournament.  Greenville and Webster's game will follow a contest between Spalding and Westminster that will begin at 6 p.m.
