Baseball drops doubleheader at Maryville

MARYVILLE, Tenn. - The baseball team dropped a doubleheader at Maryville (Tennessee) on Saturday, falling 5-1 in game one despite taking a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh and being topped 8-2 in game two of the twin bill.

Greenville put a run on the scoreboard in the second inning of game one when an RBI single from Drew Frey drove in Brexton Beard.

GU starting pitcher Braden Maltbie delivered five shutout innings in his first start of the season, limiting Maryville to five hits.

Terry Millikan relieved Maltbie in the sixth inning and provided a scoreless frame in the sixth before being touch for two runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Trent Harris closed the game on the mound for Greenville with 1.2 innings, permitting three runs on two hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

The bottom of the batting order gave the Panthers an offensive lift with the No. 7-9 positions posting six hits in 11 at bats.

Rhett Pennington produced a 3-for-3 effort at the plate with a sacrifice bunt, and Dustin Sutton went 2-for-4.

In game two GU allowed a first inning run but tied the game in the top of the third when Garrett Schmitz scored on a wild pitch.

MU added three runs in the fourth, making the score 4-1, but GU cut the deficit to 4-2 in the fifth with an RBI groundout by Blake Duncan.

Maryville tacked on one run in the sixth, two in the seventh, and one in the eighth.

Lucas Teel started on the mound and allowed four runs on seven hits over 3.2 innings.

Ian Wilson only gave up an unearned run in 2.1 innings, but the Scots reached Seth Burnham for two runs, one earned in one-third of an inning, and Dylan Boehm permitted a run in 1.2 innings.

George Schneider posted a two hit effort for Greenville, ending 2-for-3.

The Panthers (0-3) are scheduled for a doubleheader against Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday in O'Fallon, Ill.
