Baseball cannot escape defeat at MUW

COLUMBUS, Miss. - The baseball team got their first look at Mississippi University for Women and ended their Friday night contest with an 8-5 loss.

Greenville received the start on the mound from Ian Wilson, and he did not permit an earned run in four innings of action. He gave up three unearned runs on six hits and struck out three.

Austin Long followed Wilson on the mound and delivered an inning of scoreless relief.

Craig Oertel retired a batter without allowing a run in his appearance, and he was replaced by Dylan Boehm who permitted two runs, one earned, on three hits.

Trent Harris was tagged with the loss after being touched for three runs on two hits in his eighth inning appearance.

The Panthers fell behind 1-0 after the first inning and tied the score at 1-1 in the top of the first with Gerdes' RBI base hit.

MUW scored single runs in the third and fourth innings, moving ahead 3-1, but the Panthers received Drew Frey's RBI double in the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, MUW made it a 5-2 game, but the Panthers rallied with three runs in the top of the eighth to tie the score before giving up the winning runs in the bottom of the eighth. Landon Mokris drove in two runs with a base hit, and Mark Islas posted an RBI single to tie the game.

Greenville received two hits from Garrett Schmitz off the bench.

The Panthers (2-5) face MUW in a doubleheader on Saturday.
