Baseball wins second game Saturday against MUW

COLUMBUS, Miss. - The baseball team split a doubleheader with MUW on Saturday, dropping game one 5-3 and defeating the Owls 17-7 in game two.

In game one, the Panthers fell behind 2-0 in the second inning but cut the deficit to 2-1 in the top of the sixth before MUW made the score 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth.

GU reduced the Owls lead to one for a second time with two runs in the top of the eighth, but the Owls tacked on a run in the bottom of the eighth for their 5-3 margin of victory.

Greenville scored all of their runs in game one via the homer. Landon Mokris knocked the ball out of the yard in the sixth inning, and Blake Duncan added two-run homer in the eighth.

Mokris finished the game 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Drew Frey and Rhett Pennington also contributed two hits.

Luke Fleener pitched six innings for Greenville, giving up four runs, three earned, on seven hits and two walks. He also struck out six.

Tyler Parsley and Lucas Teel each provided a scoreless inning of relief.

The Panthers scored every inning but the second as they rolled to a 17-7 victory in game two.

Frey and Dustin Sutton each collected three hits in the game. Mokris, Duncan, and Pennington all added two hits. Mokris homered for the second straight game and

Jaxen Gibson was the starting pitcher and earned the no-decision with 2.2 innings of work. He allowed seven runs, six earned, on nine hits.

Braden Maltbie picked up the win in relief with 3.1 scoreless innings and three strikeouts. He only allowed three hits.

The Panthers (3-6) will continue their season in Florida during Spring Break.
