Baseball closes Spring Break with 3-2 win over Colby-Sawyer

DAVENPORT, Fla. - The baseball team finished their spring break trip to Florida with a 3-2 win on Saturday against Colby-Sawyer to give them their fifth win in seven games on the trip.

Jaxen Gibson had an outstanding pitching performance for Greenville on the mound, throwing six innings, striking out eight, and holding the Chargers to three hits. He improved to 2-1.

Braden Maltbie gave up two runs, one earned, in the ninth inning to collect his first save.

Greenville got on the scoreboard first in the top of the fourth inning. Landon Mokris started the inning with a single and advanced to second on a groundout by Logan Garrick.

Dustin Sutton managed to single to drive in Mokris and give GU a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the eighth, the Panthers scored two insurance runs that would be needed to hold on to the victory. GU started the inning with three consecutive singles from Trent Morganstern, Mark Islas, and Mokris, receiving an RBI on the Mokris single.

After Garrick sacrificed runners to second and third, Sutton provided a sacrifice fly to centerfield, bringing Islas across the plate.

In the bottom of the ninth, CSC led off with a solo home run, a single, and a double and scored a second run with the benefit of a passed ball.

With the Panther infield drawn in, Maltbie induced a groundout to second base that kept the run from scoring and finished the game with two strikeouts.

Greenville had four players - Drew Frey, Mokris, Sutton, and Tanner Gerdes - post multiple hits in the game. Frey went 3-for-5, and Mokris, Sutton, and Islas all had two hits.

The Panthers (8-8) continue their season against Millikin on Tuesday at 5 p.m. on Robert E. Smith Field.
