Baseball falls in doubleheader against Eureka

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The baseball team suffered a doubleheader sweep against Eureka, dropping game one 12-1 in eight innings before a 10-3 setback in game two.

The Red Devils scored in every inning but the sixth in game one, building an 8-0 lead before the Panthers scored a run in the bottom of the fifth when the Panthers benefited from a balk with Brock Timmermann standing on third base.

Timmermann and Zach Ury had Greenville's hits.

Braden Maltbie was the starting pitcher and worked three innings, allowing five runs, two earned, on four hits and three walks. He struck out five.

Ian Wilson relieved Maltbie with three innings, giving up three runs on four hits.

Craig Oertel gave up a run in the seventh inning, and Austin Long permitted three runs in the eighth inning.

In game two, Eureka established a 1-0 lead in the first and extended it to 3-0 in the second inning. In the top of the sixth, the Red Devils added another run.

The Panthers received a run in the bottom of the sixth on a fielder's choice when the Eureka third baseman committed an error, making it a 4-1 deficit.

In the top of the seventh, EC added three more runs, and Greenville tacked on a run in the bottom of the seventh with a sacrifice fly from Ury.

The Red Devils made the score 10-2 in the top of the eighth with another three-run frame. Timmermann produced an RBI groundout in the bottom of the eighth to end the game with a 10-3 margin.

Jaxen Gibson started on the mound and pitched into the seventh inning, allowing seven runs, four earned on seven hits.

Lucas Teel entered the game in the seventh, closing the inning and working one out of the eighth inning.

Terry Millikan relieved Teel and went 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and two walks, while collecting two strikeouts.

The Panthers (8-10, 0-2 SLIAC) finish their series against Eureka on Monday at Robert E. Smith Field at 5 p.m.
