Baseball takes doubleheader against Blackburn

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The baseball team righted the ship on Saturday, picking up a doubleheader sweep against Blackburn. The Panthers won game one 3-2 in 10 innings and rolled to a 9-1 victory in game two.

The Panthers slipped behind 1-0 in the first inning of game one and eventually trailed 2-0 in the third inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, Zach Ury delivered a two-run single, plating Tanner Gerdes and Dustin Sutton, to tie the score at 2-all.

After receiving six innings of two-run baseball from starting pitcher Braden Maltbie, head coach Lynn Carlson handed the ball to Ian Wilson who pitched two scoreless innings and Trent Harris who closed the game with two scoreless frames.

The Panthers scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th after gaining a leadoff double from Brock Timmermann. With Drew Frey batting, the Panthers attempted to bunt the winning run to third base, but Blackburn threw the ball away, bringing Timmermann home for the winning run.

In game two, Greenville took advantage of the situation immediately, receiving a grand slam from Timmermann in the first inning among their five runs.

The Panthers added two runs in the fourth and two in the fifth.

Frey went 4-for-5 in game two with two runs scored and three RBI.

Mokris was 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored while Rhett Pennington went 2-for-4 with a run.

Pitcher Jaxen Gibson completed eight innings, allowing one run on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

Terry Millikan allowed a baserunner in the ninth but finished with a scoreless inning of work.

The Panthers evened their season record at 11-11 and moved above .500 at 3-2 in SLIAC play. The Panthers will host the Beavers on Monday at 4 p.m. at Robert E. Smith Field.
