Baseball drops 13-4 contest against Fontbonne

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The baseball team had their SLIAC winning streak stopped at four by Fontbonne on Friday afternoon at Robert E. Smith Field when the Panthers suffered a 13-4 loss.

Playing earlier in the afternoon than originally scheduled due to cold temperatures, the Panthers led 2-0 after two innings before Fontbonne put six runs on the scoreboard over the third and fourth innings in taking control of the game.

The loss brought an end to a winning streak that started in the final game against Eureka and extended through a sweep of Blackburn.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Panthers scored twice to make it an 8-4 game, but the Griffins added one run in the seventh and four runs in the top of the ninth.

Drew Frey and Garrett Schmitz sparked Greenville's offense from the top of the lineup, combining to go 4-for-8 with three runs. Each player was 2-for-4.

Braden Maltbie drew the start on the mound and worked into the fifth inning, allowing seven runs, six earned, on eight hits, two walks, and two hit batsmen. His record dropped to 1-2 after the loss.

The Panthers (12-12, 4-3 SLIAC) will play Fontbonne in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
