Baseball splits day one against Westminster

FULTON, Mo. - The baseball team split their doubleheader with Westminster on Friday, dropping the first game 16-5 and winning game two 14-7.

The Blue Jays led the Panthers 9-5 heading into the bottom of the eighth before Westminster scored seven to finish the game.

Drew Frey, Mark Islas, and Rhett Pennington posted two hits for the Panthers, and Landon Mokris drove in three runs in game one.

Zach Ury hit a home run in the fourth inning, and Trent Morgenstern provided a homer in the sixth inning.

Panther starting pitcher Braden Maltbie gave up eight runs, six earned, on 11 hits and one walk over five innings. Ian Wilson pitched the sixth inning and allowed one run, and Austin Long pitched a scoreless inning of relief. Brady Salzman was eventually saddled with seven runs in one-third of an inning.

The Panthers offense showed their proficiency in game two, building a 6-0 lead after two innings and a 9-1 lead after GU batted in the top of the fourth.

The Blue Jays made the score 9-5, but GU added three runs in the top of the sixth to make it a 12-5 game. Each team added two more runs before the contest concluded.

Blake Duncan went a perfect 4-for-4 with one run and six RBI's, producing a two-run single in the first, an RBI double in the fourth, and a three-run homer in the sixth inning.

Mokris and Ury also added three hits in game two, and Islas scored three runs.

Jaxen Gibson worked into the fifth inning, allowing five runs, four earned, over 4.1 innings.

Terry Millikan picked up the win with 3.2 innings of relief. Millikan allowed two runs on four hits.

Lucas Teel closed the game with a scoreless inning.

The Panthers (14-14, 6-5 SLIAC) will conclude their series with the Blue Jays on Saturday at Noon.
