Baseball falls in doubleheader to No. 10 Webster

SAUGET, Ill. - The baseball team managed to complete both games of their Saturday doubleheader against Webster despite weather concerns, dropping game one 5-0 as the victims of Webster hurler Alek Elges's perfect game and later falling 10-4 in game two.

The Panthers wasted a solid outing from starting pitcher Luke Fleener in game one. Fleener pitched 6.2 innings, only allowing two runs on seven hits against the NCAA Division III No. 10 nationally ranked Webster squad.

Dylan Boehm relieved Fleener in the seventh inning, entering the game with runners on first and second and induced a groundout to wrap up the inning.

In the eighth inning, the Gorloks tagged Boehm for three runs before sending Elges back out to the mound to complete the perfect game.

In Greenville's top of the ninth inning, Rhett Pennington grounded out, Dustin Sutton struck out swinging, and Garrett Schmitz fittingly hit a comebacker to Elges who tossed the ball to first base to complete his unblemished start.

In game two, Greenville starting pitcher Trent Harris allowed seven runs, four earned, in the first inning before settling down to make it through four innings.

Braden Maltbie pitched four innings of relief, giving up three runs, one earned, in the sixth inning, and a total of four hits during his outing.

Greenville scored a pair of runs in the second and fourth innings.

Trent Morgenstern provided a two-run double in the top of the second inning, and Dustin Sutton and Austin Lawrence posted RBI singles in the fourth inning.

The Panthers (15-22) will attempt to rejoin the win column with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 7, at Principia before the conference tournament begins on Tuesday, May 10.
