Baseball knocks out Fontbonne, drops final game of season against Spalding

'FALLON, Mo. - The baseball team wrapped up their season on Friday with a 13-4 win over Fontbonne in an elimination game before being defeated by Spalding 9-3 in another elimination game.

Fontbonne took the lead in the first game, posting a single run in each of the first two innings.

In the top of the third, an error on a ball hit by Trent Morgenstern gave the Panthers their first run, and Greenville tied the game and took the lead in the top of the fourth when Dustin Sutton was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Austin Lawrence bunted safely to drive in a run.

GU took a 7-2 lead when Drew Frey launched a grand slam in the top of the fourth against Fontbonne.  The Panthers eventually settled on a 13-2 win, finishing Fontbonne's season.

Frey drove in five runs and had two hits to lead the Panther offense.

In addition, Mark Islas went 3-for-4, Austin Lawrence was 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI, and Dustin Sutton added a 2-for-4 game with three RBI.

Jaxen Gibson worked 6.2 innings, allowing three runs on nine hits, in picking up the win. Terry Millikan got the last out of the seventh, and Seth Burnham pitched two innings and allowed one run.

In game two, GU baseball's last game of the season, the Panthers allowed a run in the bottom of the first and five in the third as Spalding took a lead they would not give up.

Rhett Pennington delivered a 2-for-4 hitting performance.

Lucas Teel started on the mound and gave up four runs in 2.2 innings.

Millikan entered game two as well and only worked two-thirds of an inning before yielding the mound to Luke Fleener who finished the game with 4.2 innings and permitted two runs.

The Panthers finished the season with a record of 19-24 and a fourth place showing in the SLIAC standings.
