Baseball smothers Platteville in 17-9 win

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The baseball team scored three or more runs in five different innings in their 17-9 victory over Wisconsin-Platteville on Friday afternoon.

GU led 4-0 after the first and 7-0 after two innings. Platteville added single runs in the third and fourth innings before Greenville took a 10-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth.

UWP made the score 10-5 in the sixth, but GU added three runs in the bottom of the sixth to build their lead back to 13-5.

The Pioneers cut the deficit to 13-9 with four in the seventh, and the Panthers added three runs in the seven and one in the eighth to reach 17 runs scored.

Greenville's offensive production came throughout the lineup with seven players posting multiple hits.

Thomas Dowell, Nathan Eye, and Trent Morgenstern all recorded three hits and four RBI.

Rhett Pennington and Snyder Pennington were both 2-for-3 with four runs scored, and R. Pennington homered.

Dowell and Zack McClease each crossed the plate twice.

Luke Fleener picked up the win on the mound, giving up five runs on nine hits over 5.2 innings.

Terry Millikan pitched three innings, only allowing an unearned run, for the save.

The Panthers (1-3) will host Central (Iowa) on Saturday at Noon at Robert E. Smith Field.
