Baseball splits Saturday doubleheader

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The baseball team split a doubleheader with Loras on Saturday when they used a four run 10th inning rally to take game one 6-5 before dropping game two 16-8.

The Panthers and Duhawks opened game one by each scoring in the first inning. Loras later took a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning, but the Panthers recorded a run in the eighth inning to tie the game.

After three runs by Loras in the 10th inning, the Panthers benefited from a series of walks including a final walk to Dylan Hill with the bases loaded that won the game.

Braden Maltbie pitched six innings for the Panthers and allowed two runs on four hits.

Stephen Hardwick entered the game to deliver three scoreless innings of relief before Loras scored three runs against Terry Millikan.

Jacob Sutton, Snyder Pennington, and Brexton Beard all recorded two hits with Beard providing a two-run single in the 10th. Sutton and Pennington both scored two runs.

The Panthers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of game two, but Loras eventually tied the game with three in the top of the third.

GU retook the lead with a run in the bottom of the third, but Loras posted two runs in the fourth, six in the fifth, and three in the sixth while holding the Panthers to only three additional runs that GU scored in the fourth.

Loras tacked on two more runs in the top of the eight, and GU posted a run in the bottom of the ninth.

Beard finished 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored and three RBI.

Beard and Landon Mokris each homered, and Nathan Eye tallied two runs scored.

Luke McBee picked up the loss on the mound when he worked the fifth inning that eventually ended with the Duhawks scoring six runs.

Cade Buehnerkemper started the game on the mound and pitched into the fourth inning, allowing five runs, two earned, on seven hits.

The Panthers (3-6) travel to Millikin for a game on Wednesday.
