Baseball opens Florida swing with day one split

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The baseball team opened their spring trip with a 6-4 win over Hope on Monday morning followed by a Monday afternoon 9-7 loss to North Park.

The Panthers came from behind to eliminate a first inning deficit with a pair of runs in the third inning and one in the fourth.

Jacob Sutton delivered an RBI double that scored Rhett Pennington in the third, and Landon Mokris provided an RBI single that allowed Sutton to score later in the third.

In the fourth inning, Logan Doll scored on a balk.

Greenville added another run in the bottom of the sixth when Doll crossed home plate on an error by the third baseman.

In the seventh inning Rhett Pennington provided a two-run single to put GU on top 6-1.

The Panthers held off a three run Hope rally in the top of the ninth inning for the win.

Mokris finish the game 2-for-5 with one run scored and one RBI. Rhett Pennington was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.

The pitching win went to Luke Fleener, who only allowed one run over seven innings. Fleener struck out eight.

Jacob Hammer earned the save when he recorded the final out of the game, relieving Stephen Hardwick.

The second game of the day saw the Panthers leading 3-1 after the third and 5-1 after the fourth.

The Panthers scored a run on the top of the six to go on top 6-1, but North Park scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to go on top 8-6.

Both teams added a run in the eighth inning.

George Schneider posted a game to remember from the leadoff spot with a 3-for-4 performance that included three runs scored, three RBIs, a home run, and double.

Snyder Pennington was 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI, and Landon Mokris went 1-for-4 with one run scored and two RBI.

Starter Cade Buehnerkemper pitched effective for four innings, only allowing one run on three hits. He struck out four and walked two.

Terry Millikan relieved Ian Wilson in the sixth and gave up five runs in one-third of an inning.

Ty Kueper only allowed one run on five hits over 2.1 innings of relief.

The Panthers (4-8) will continue their season against Anderson in Florida on Tuesday.
