Baseball receives late inning heroics in 8-7 extra inning win

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The baseball team walked off Wabash on Tuesday afternoon with a game-winning home run by Rhett Pennington in the bottom of the tenth inning that gave the Panthers an 8-7 win.

Greenville entered the bottom of the ninth inning trailing by three runs, but the Panthers posted an admirable effort to tie the contest before winning in extra innings.

The Little Giants took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the Panthers cut the deficit in one-half with an RBI single from Zack McClease in the bottom of the second.

A two-run home by Landon Mokris in the third inning gave the Panthers a 3-2 advantage.

Wabash tied and took the lead in the fifth inning with three runs and tacked on another run in the top of sixth for a 6-3 lead.

Thomas Dowell scored on a wild pick off attempt by the catcher in the sixth inning, but the Little Giants got that run back in the eighth inning.

In the Panthers three-run ninth inning, Snyder Pennington scored on a wild pitch, Trent Morgenstern offered a sacrifice fly to chase Mokris home, and Markus Isaiah later scored the tying run on a wild pitch.

Rhett Pennington provided the game winning home run with a towering shot to right field in the tenth inning.

S. Pennington produced a 3-for-5 performance at the plate with two runs scored, and Mokris finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Cade Buehnerkemper performed admirably in the start on the mound, holding Wabash to two runs, one earned, on seven hits over four innings.

Braden Maltbie provided work over the sixth through ninth innings, only permitting an unearned run with four strikeouts.

Jacob Hammer received the win with a scoreless tenth inning on the mound.

The Panthers (6-12) will travel to Rose-Hulman for a game on Wednesday.
