Baseball drops both ends of doubleheader to Spalding

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The baseball team opened the 2024 SLIAC portion of their season with two losses at home against Spalding. The Panthers fell in game one 11–2 and suffered a 6-1 setback in game two.

Spalding held GU to only two hits in game one, and both GU runs were scored in the eighth inning.

Jacob Sutton took a bases loaded walk to drive in GU's first run, and Brexton Beard posted an infield single to third base to drive home another run.

Snyder Pennington also had a hit in the game.

The losing pitcher was Luke Fleener. He gave the Panthers six innings on the mound and only permitted five runs, three earned, on nine hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

The second game stood at 3-0 until Spalding broke loose for three runs in the top of the ninth, and the Panthers could only muster one run in their final at bat.

Greenville's offense was held to hits from Sutton, Landon Mokris, and Beard.

Cade Buehnerkemper worked effectively over six innings, only allowing three runs, one earned, on eight hits. He walked three and struck out two.

Braden Maltbie relieved Buehnerkemper with two scoreless frames before Spalding tacked on three in the top of the ninth.

The Panthers (6-15, 0-2 SLIAC) will next play Lyon at home on Wednesday in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
