Football takes care of Northwestern-St. Paul with 35-23 win

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The football team won their second consecutive UMAC contest with a 35-23 win over Northwestern-St. Paul on Saturday at Francis Field.  The Panthers carried a 21-7 lead to halftime and extended their lead to 28-7 before UNW added a pair of touchdowns to tighten the score to 28-21.  Late in the fourth quarter with 5:23 to play, Robert Regans caught a six yard touchdown pass from Chase Butterfield to make it a two-possession game and provide Greenville with the cushion they needed to stay on top in the UMAC standings.

Northwestern grabbed the early lead when Jacob Emley picked off a pass by Greenville quarterback Chase Butterfield on GU's second possession and ran the ball back 47 yards for the touchdown.

The Panthers tied the game on their next drive, taking the ball 66 yards on 11 plays, and receiving a four yard touchdown run from Paul Garrett.

The Panthers entered the second quarter knotted up 7-all, but Greenville scored a pair of touchdowns in the period.

With just over six minutes to play before halftime, GU received an interception from Abdul Muhammad and took possession.  On just the second play of the drive, Garrett broke off a 44-yard touchdown run.

Greenville got the ball back again with 3:35 to play in the half and progressed 94 yards in six plays, receiving a 10 yard touchdown run by Adrian Hinton with 1:12 remaining in the half.

In the third quarter, the Panthers took the ball on their first possession and drove 55 yards in nine plays, ending with a 10 yard touchdown reception by Delrey Crowder to move ahead 28-7.

UNW scored a touchdown with 2:45 to go in the third quarter and added another TD with 10:43 left in the fourth, cutting GU's lead to 28-21.

However, the Panthers marched right down the field, possessing the ball for over five minutes until Robert Regans caught a six yard touchdown pass from Butterfield with 5:23 to play in the game.

The Eagles added a safety in the fourth quarter when they blocked a punt in the end zone, but that was the extent of the damage that they could inflict upon Greenville for the remainder of the game.

The Panthers dominated play offensively, collecting 480 yards of total offense and limiting Northwestern to 162 yards.

Greenville ran the ball 51 times for 209 yards with Garrett gaining 125 yards on 30 carries.  Hinton had 63 yards on eight touches.

Butterfield completed 17-of-23 passes for 271 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions.

Jabree Berry was GU's most prolific receiver, totaling 80 yards on three catches.

Greenville's defense showed up huge in the game with four quarterback sacks, two interceptions, and two forced fumbles.

Matthew Binion led GU with two quarterback sacks, his only tackles of the game, while Thomas Linnear and Turjon McLaurin each had one sack.

Isaac Green was a leader in the secondary with two interceptions.
