Football tops Rockford to even season record at 1-1

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The football program defeated Rockford on Saturday at home, scoring at least one touchdown in every quarter and taking a 40-30 victory.

The Panthers held a 7-0 lead after the first quarter and were up 14-7 at halftime, receiving a pair of rushing touchdowns from Adrian Hinton.

In the third quarter, GU extended their lead to 31-7 by scoring 17 unanswered points.

Peyton Bates connected with Delrey Crowder on a 41 yard pass for a TD, and Lucas Hermo made a 31 yard field goal.

Paul Garrett scored the first of his two second half touchdowns at the end of the third quarter.

In the final stanza, Rockford outscored Greenville 23-9, but the Regents were unable to make it a one possession game. Garrett posted another touchdown in the fourth quarter, and Hermo connected on a 32 yard field goal.

The Panthers were led in rushing by Garrett with 154 yards on 18 carries, and Hinton ended with 95 yards on 11 carries.

Quarterback Peyton Bates completed 9-of-19 passes for 132 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.

GU's defensive unit was led by Lakari Benjamin with seven tackles, and Jaden Apple-Gibbs posted six tackles, three for a loss.

Lawrence Harris contributed an interception.

The Panthers (1-1) will host Manchester on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 1 p.m. on Francis Field.
