Football drops 63-7 decision to Olivet

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The third of four straight home games on the Greenville football schedule ended in favor of GU's opponent when Olivet from the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) traveled to Greenville for the first time and handed the Panthers a 63-7 loss.

Greenville fell behind on the opening possession after the Comets moved 84 yards in three plays to score an early touchdown. Before the first quarter ended, Olivet scored twice more to carry a 21-0 advantage into the second quarter.

In the second period after another Olivet TD, Greenville made it a 28-7 game when Paul Garrett ran for a 51 yard touchdown, Greenville's only scoring play of the day. Before the half ended, the Comets posted another two touchdowns to take a commanding 42-7 lead into the locker room.

In the second half, the Comets outscored Greenville 14-0 in the third quarter and 7-0 in the final stanza.

Despite the final score, the Panthers did manage to move the ball against the Olivet defense. The Panthers piled up 421 yards of total offense, recording 281 yards rushing and 140 yards passing. Garrett provided Greenville with 128 yards on 22 carries. Adrian Hinton posted 50 yards on nine touches.

The Panther receiving corps was led by four receptions from Terrance Brown for 49 yards. Brown also added 33 rushing yards.

The Panthers used four quarterbacks in the game, and Peyton Bates finished 7-of-19 for 78 yards and one interception. Nicholas Sanford went 6-of-8 with 51 yards in a reserve role.

The GU defense was led by Dewayne Garrett with six tackles, including one for a loss of yards. Braeden Wells had two tackles for a loss, and Derrick Ferguson added a tackle behind the line of scrimmage.

The Panthers (2-2) will face Martin Luther, a team they defeated in overtime last season, in a game next Saturday, Oct. 1 in Greenville. Kickoff is scheduled for Noon.
