Football runs through Adrian for 45-35 win

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The football team led at the end of every quarter, but the Panthers had to overcome an 11 point deficit on two occasions in the third quarter as they ended the game with 28 of the last 35 points in their 45-35 victory over Adrian on Saturday.

During the game, the Panthers' Paul Garrett ran for 116 yards on 16 carries to break the Panther record for career rushing yards. Garrett now has eight more yards than the previous record holder Anthony Dodson who ran for 5,222 yards from 1988-91. Garrett has posted 5,230 yards during his career.

The game's leading rusher was Adrian Hinton who piled up 207 yards on 18 carries.

Peyton Bates completed 17-of-28 passes for 196 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions.

Bates connected with Matthew Tiger, Jabree Berry, Hinton, and Delrey Crowder for touchdown receptions.

Tanner Eubanks didn't score a touchdown but finished as GU's leading receiver with six receptions for 65 yards.

Garrett ran for a 45 yard touchdown in the first quarter, and Hinton broke loose for a 70 yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

Greenville led 7-0 after Garrett's first quarter touchdown, and Lucas Hermo added a 32 yard field goal to give GU a 10-0 lead in the second quarter.

Adrian scored the next three TD's to go on top 21-10 with 11:05 to go in the third quarter.

Hinton's rushing TD made the score 21-17, and Adrian bounced right back with a touchdown to go ahead 28-17.

After touchdown passes to Berry and Tiger, GU held a 31-28 lead.

Adrian regained the lead with a touchdown, but the Panthers scored the last two touchdowns to win the game.

Greenville's defensive effort was led by Mitchell Schaeffer with eight tackles, including three for a loss and an assisted sack.

Thomas Linnear had eight tackles and two and a half sacks.

Braeden Wells and William Nowlin each had an interception, and Linnear posted a fumble recovery.

The Panthers (3-1) will play their opening UMAC game of the season on Saturday against Minnesota Morris at 12 p.m. at Don Stout Field.
