Football comes up just short in 31-29 loss at Martin Luther

NEW ULM, Minn. - The football team fought back from an 18 point deficit with 16 points in the fourth quarter, but the Panthers dropped their second UMAC game of the season 31-29 at Martin Luther on Saturday afternoon.

MLC opened the scoring with a field goal in the first quarter and added a touchdown early in the second quarter. After making the PAT, the score stood at 10-0 in the Knights favor.

Paul Garrett broke loose on a 62 yard run for the first of his three touchdowns with just under 10 minutes to play in the first half, but MLC tacked on a touchdown with 4:29 left in the second quarter to lead 17-6 at halftime.

Early in the third quarter, a Knights touchdown made the score 24-6. Garrett scored on a 13 yard run to bring the score to 24-13.

With less than three minutes to play in the third period, MLC crossed the goal line again for a TD to take a 31-13 lead into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, GU scored 16 unanswered points. Garrett ran the ball from two yards out for his third TD, and the team acquired a safety 12 seconds later.

With 1:46 to play in the game, Terrance Brown caught a pass from Peyton Bates for an eight yard touchdown pass.

Garrett finished the game with 23 carries for 210 yards.

Bates completed 14 of 31 passes for 112 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions.

Delrey Crowder caught six balls for 45 yards.

Thomas Linnear led the defense with 10 tackles, one of which was a quarterback sack, and Elias Velasquez and Mitchell Schaeffer each had eight tackles.

Kourtland Harris recovered a fumble, and Garrett intercepted a pass on defense.

The Panthers (3-3, 0-2 UMAC) will host Northwestern in their Homecoming game on October 21 at Don Stout Field at noon.
